- Heat-treated Padparadscha sapphire - many gemstones undergo gentle heat treatment to intensify or stabilize their color. This is common practice and widely accepted within the gemstone trade.
- Diffusion-treated sapphires - beryllium diffusion is used to create a Padparadscha-like color. These gemstones are less desirable and significantly less valuable than naturally colored specimens.
- Synthetic Padparadscha sapphires - laboratory-grown gemstones, often with near-perfect color. While useful for educational purposes and affordable jewelry, they lack the rarity and value of natural Padparadscha sapphires.
Origin of Padparadscha sapphire
Historically, Sri Lanka (Ceylon) is the classic and most famous source of Padparadscha sapphire. The first specimens were discovered there, and the name itself originates from the local language.Today, Padparadscha sapphires are also found in:
- Madagascar – a major modern source, producing gemstones that often rival Sri Lankan material in both color and quality.

Padparadscha sapphire treatments
- Heat treatment - the most common enhancement. Improves or intensifies color and is widely accepted when properly disclosed.
- Beryllium diffusion - color is artificially introduced into the crystal through diffusion. While this creates Padparadscha-like hues, it significantly reduces the gemstone's value.
- Synthetic production - produced using methods such as the Verneuil process or hydrothermal growth. These gemstones are commonly used in lower-priced jewelry.
